Was Andere Sagen …

What Others Say …

International Piano

Billed as „Jazz Piano Music for Classical Players“, Michael Publig’s [Jazz Piano Suite], a 30-minute suite … resembles a proverbial encyclopaedia of jazz styles. We have variations that emulate the spirit and salient characteristics of Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and many others. The music itself rips off the page, and is wonderfully colourful, varied and inspirational. Publig’s craftsmanship, exciting concept and inspirational approach here deserves the highest praise.

Dear Michael Publig,

many thanks for the exquisite Jazz Piano Suite both as sheet music and in your own CD recording – masterfully played!

These 15 jazz variations on a Chinese folk song are fine miniatures which definitely deserve to enter the pedagogic canon not only for jazz piano students, but also and especially for young adepts of classical music.

These pieces remind me of the best entries in Schumann’s «Album für die Jugend» and of certain pieces by Bartók, for example of the «10 easy pieces for piano» and of the Bulgarian rhythms in «Mikrokosmos». They combine delicate poetical moods with a relative easiness of playability while being very demanding in the rhythmical field. Similarly to Schumann the piano’s middle range is preferred.

I especially like Joe Zawinul (track 3), Dave Brubeck (track 4), Bill Evans (track 8), Kenny Barron in 3/4-time (track 9), Lang Lang meets New York (track 12), Teddy Wilson (track 16). The atmosphere of Bill Evans reminds me of Bartók’s «An Evening in Transsylvania».

Again, my warmest thanks and best wishes for the success!

Yours, Paul Badura-Skoda

Piano News

Michael Publig is a most knowledgeable composer, … I think that any pupil who is serious about jazz would be fascinated. Although the pieces can be played from the page without any improvisation, they develop a genuine feel for the jazz idiom. Occasionally one is disappointed that the textures are thinner than those you would expect from the artist concerned, but I think that Publig is trying to keep the pieces to between grade 6 and grade 8 standard. The rhythms can be quite challenging. Publig is prolific; there are many other books of his on the market in the ‘Jazz On’ series.
